This quilt was bought from Sofiya Mutawa, the maker in 2005. Each year, she makes one quilt to sell to help ensure the financial security of her family. The centre of the quilt features dense embroidery referencing Mogul designs, and the borders showcase the love of contemporary colour in commercial fabrics, finally stitched to form the quilt's border.
I was lucky enough to be able to buy 2 pieces. The other quilt is now part of the collection of the Queensland Art Gallery and can be referenced in the publication for their exhibition, Threads: Contemporary Textiles & the Social Fabric in 2011. Making these fine quilts promotes the textile tradition of her Mutawa culture and allows Sofiya to keep her dowry textiles.
This quilt has Velcro ,hand-stitched to the reverse for hanging.
